Crankcase, exhaust, carburetor, and fuel tank are all sources of emission from automobile; latter two sources are termed evaporative or hot soak losses, since they occur only during periods when car is stopped; these losses amount to 20% of all hydrocarbon losses from automobiles; at present, there is no system available for controlling these losses; exhaust accounts for 60% of hydrocarbons and practically all carbon monoxide; remaining 20% of hydrocarbons are emissions from crankcase; between 1968 and 1980, it is believed that research programs on gasoline engines will result in progress toward solution of emission control problem.
