U S Federal specifications require reduction of glare by sunlight reflection from metallic trim items in driver's view; specifications imply that matte surfaces must be used; instruments specified for measurement of reflectance were 20° glossmeters which can only be used on flat surfaces, however only few surfaces on automobile trim are flat and large enough for measurement by glossmeters; study shows that increased curvature of mirrorlike trim surfaces offers alternate approach to reduction of glare which may be equivalent to use of matte surfaces now required; reduction of discomfort glare through curvature can be achieved by demagnification of sun's image.
