Tests performed to determine ability of automotive lighting and safety devices to withstand environmental conditions are based on SAE specifications, established years ago at Institute of Transportation and Traffic Engineering; to ascertain whether or not tests are still valid, field investigation was conducted of factory-installed (OEM) lamps and safety belts on 81 domestic-make vehicles in service; effects of dust, moisture, corrosion and heat resulting from exposure to natural environment were investigated; results indicate that rain, spray and plastic stability tests in use in laboratory are adequate.
