High-speed driving on highways makes it possible for engines to be operating in condition of spark knock for considerable time; knock might not be detected by driver, but could initiate chain of events leading to engine damage; procedure has been devised for tests for spark knock at high speeds, employing cars mounted on vehicle dynamometers; tests on 30 European car models, all having manual transmissions, led to critical knock speed concept for making comparisons between high speed knock susceptibilities of various designs of engine; comparisons have shown that over-advanced spark timing is prime reason for high speed knock.
