Problems of vision in flight at low altitude are not encountered solely in military aviation, for all flying at some stage takes place at low altitude; furthermore, increasing use of helicopters in civil aviation places even more emphasis on general knowledge of visual problems encountered in this type of flying; problem areas considered seem to fall naturally into four broad categories; these are -- external environment; man's response to this environment; human engineering considerations as result of man's limitations; and, finally, selection and training for this arduous task of low-level flying, in which tolerable margin of error is probably less than in most other phases of flight.
