Two new vessels, Portsmouth Queen and Gosport Queen were both built by John I.Thornycroft and Co Ltd for Portsmouth Harbor Ferry Co Ltd; hull is of shallow round-bilge form, with knuckle or chine above load waterline, and is drawn out tospoon bow and transom stern; Schottel rudder-propeller units consist of conventional propellers mounted on assembly, whole of which can be rotated through 360° about vertical axis to provide thrust in any direction; one unit at each end of ferry is driven by Gardner diesel engine developing 150 bhp at 1000 rpm; vessel capacity is 500 passengers.
