Details of all reported road accidents in Zaria Province in 1964, and analyzed results in both rural and urban conditions; fatality rates were found to be at least ten times those for United Kingdom with similar figures for all injury accidents; various contributory factors were examined, including, in rural areas, serious effect of mixing high-speed motor vehicles with peasant pedestrians and cyclists, and of carriage of passengers and goods together in back of trucks; in urban areas lack of segregation of intensive pedestrian activities such as markets, from motor traffic, and general misbehavior of cyclists and pedestrians are important factors; finally various possible remedial measures concerning user, vehicle, and road and other environmental conditions are considered.
