Experimental results indicate that external noise can be reduced by correct fan design; noise levels were measured at distance of 7 m from locomotive body at height of 1.6 m above rail level; it was found that principal noise source was due to compressors; fan noise may be reduced by efficient airfoil sections, reduced number of blades and by reducing blade oscillations.
