Compression-ignition engines have been adopted by U S Army to provide vehicles capable of operating for extended periods at idle and part load, and with reduced fuel consumption; laboratory test technique was developed for predicting fuel/lubricant compatibility with wheeled and tracked vehicle engines; laboratory technique data were correlated with results obtained from engines, operated on tests designed to evaluate effect of several combat operating conditions for life expected of vehicle; that is, 20,000 mi for wheeled and 4000 mi for tracked vehicles; data were analyzed to show repeatibility and sensitivity of test results.
