As part of electric vehicle state-of-art evaluation, General Motors built fuel cell powered van, to explore potential and problems of fuel cell power plant; fuel cells were considered as possible electric power sources because they offer potential of high thermal efficiency and extended range compared with batteries; although Electrovan was successfully operated on road, it was concluded that much research and development work is still needed; encouraging rate of progress and advantages of fuel cells provide stimulus to maintain strong continuing effort in this field.
