Compression brake, developed by Power Brake Equipment Co consists of gate, poppet or butterfly valve bolted directly to exhaust system; valve is air, hydraulic, vacuum or electrically actuated and in some instances mechanically; efficiency is governed by engine displacement, design and condition; effectiveness of brake as retarder in controlling vehicle on down grades; other advantages are increased life of lining, lower maintenance costs and control of engine temperature.
