Concept of cooling passenger and crew compartments, as proposed by Boeing Co, utilizes air flowing outwardly through wall insulation to prevent aerodynamic heat from passing through wall; principle, called heat intercept system, was successfully tested on full scale aircraft body section; schematic of air conditioning and distribution system; aerodynamic heat flow into cabin can be reduced by 80% when 1.5 lb/hr/sq ft is allowed to pass through wall under conditions where outside skin temperature is 500 F; system is ideally suited for SST.
