Basic design requirements, such as minimum number of parts, giving easier assembly and less tool cost, leading to cheaper product with simpler servicing, all contributing to greater reliability; importance of assessment of potential points of failure is illustrated by 3 examples; attainment of reliability, production standards, and maintenance of reliability; tabulation of in-flight electrical failures of Royal Air Force jet aircraft for period of 1956-60 shows that switchgear and wiring produce most failures.
