X-21A research aircraft is designed to demonstrate practicality of design, manufacture, operation, and maintenance of Laminar Flow Control aircraft and to acquire data for direct application to future aircraft systems; laminar flow control principle and concept of pumping system to remove boundary layer air from wing surfaces of Laminar Flow Control aircraft; pumping system requirements and design characteristics for future applications; system selection, and system operation; pumping design and development.
