Research program undertaken to locate origin of fatigue following loss, due to engine trouble, of number of Douglas B.66 bomber aircraft of United States Air Force in Europe; technique and equipment used successfully to carry out ultrasonic inspection of compressor rotor blades of Allison J.71 turbojet while still installed in engine; Rayleigh wave mode was chosen as most suitable for detection of fatigue cracks.
