Basic size for series of demountable freight containers covered by ASA MH5 standards is 40×8×8-ft van container; this appears to be maximum practical size from both manufacturing and operating viewpoints, and is largest size legal on practically all highways of United States; nominal lengths are in 10-ft increments; 2 sizes of cargo containers are part of same series; MH5.1-1962, illustrates both types and gives specifications; work is in progress on standard methods of handling and mounting to provide for universal interchange between different modes of transportation, and on smaller pallet containers.
