Author shows in light of turbine theory of propeller action that circumferential variation of pitch is necessary to ensure smooth or shock-free transition of blade at any radius through water, and he develops methods from which, under given conditions, necessary variation can be determined; discusses influence of wake and inflow at any radius; circumferential variation of pitch appears to be of chief importance in minimizing vibrations of propellers and those induced by them.
