All experimental results used were obtained in slotted-wall, transonic wind tunnels of Aerodynamics Div, National Physical Laboratory; for symmetrical airfoils at zero incidence in transonic flows, use of nozzle analogy led to good correlations for critical Mach number, stock wave position, crest Mach number, and slope of Mach number distribution at crest; independent variables used were stream Mach number, airfoil curvature at crest, chordwise crest position, and airfoil thickness; latter is only important at lower end of transonic speed range.
