Reason for renewed interest in transonic airfoils is advent of aircraft designed to cruise at supersonic speeds; airfoil test techniques in Boeing Transonic Wind Tunnel were required to have minimum departure from normal tunnel configurations; wing models were mounted vertically from solid-floor turntable with test region contained between two large horizontal end plates; technique produced accurate data at section Reynolds number of 6,000,000; on-line analog system provided plots of section pressure distributions, wake profiles, and drag polars for immediate analysis.
