After many years of preparatory work in wind-tunnel testing and analysis, X-21A, 80,000-lb jet airplane with laminar flow control wing, was designed by Northrop; laminar flow control reduces wake drag on wing by surface suction; suction system consists of turbocompressor units that remove boundary-layer air from wing surface by many fine slots in skin; gain due to laminar flow control on wing of big, long-range transport airplane is expected to be 35% in range at same payload and similar percentage in payload at same range.
