Boeing-Bendix Automatic Landing System has been certified by FAA (Federal Aviation Agency) for visual touchdowns as first step toward 700 ft RVR (Runway Visual Range) operations; to obtain certification, flight test program had to solve several operational problems in order to meet rigid FAA requirements; all reasonably possible failures, including hardovers just prior to touchdown, were introduced during approach; performance had to be tailored for satisfactory results on noisy ILS (Instrument Landing System) as well as Category II facilities.
