One of more challenging problems facing designer of VTOL aircraft is mismatch in thrust that exists between takeoff and cruise flight conditions; results of analysis evaluating several lift systems installed in VTOL fighter and transport aircraft indicate that engines must be uncompromisingly designed for cruise, and available thrust also be utilized for vertical flight; thrust needed above this amount, to account for difference in takeoff weight and aircraft control, should be provided by separate lift engines; ultimate selection of lift engine configuration will be established primarily by aircraft hover and control requirements.
