Ground effects on V/STOL and STOL aircraft arise from fact that these aircraft support themselves by deflecting air downward; presence of ground interrupts downward flow with attendant effects on both ground and aircraft; ground effects on transport aircraft in 50,000-lb class will not be significant at heights above about 20 to 30 ft and velocities above about 40 to 50 knots; at lower heights and velocities, aircraft will experience self-induced disturbances and hot-gas ingestion due to recirculated slipstreams, and lift losses and trim changes in STOL operation.
