Processes involved in landing aircraft on carrier are indicated; study, carried out in water tunnel, was concerned with identifying cause and nature of major dynamic disturbances existing about glide path area, measuring steady-state velocity magnitudes and directions and dynamic horizontal and vertical velocities in this area; overhang of deck is major source of disturbances; dynamic vertical velocity fluctuations are stronger and persist longer than horizontal velocity fluctuations, and stronger disturbances are produced when wind is along landing deck than when wind is aligned more closely with keel line.
