Paper assesses trends of direct costs by examining some 30 aircraft coming into service between 1946 and 1967; analysis shows that operating costs have halved in real terms over decade; direct cost changes have been equally split between increased aircraft efficiency including effect of size and putting more seats in given space together with increased utilization; there are commercial limits to rate at which size increases but, where these do not apply, there are cost and operational advantages of large size; reliability is most hopeful design feature to improve utilization and cut maintenance costs.
