Method of evaluating analytically matching problems of engine design vs airplane design uses presentation of airplane performance which facilitates determination of range or endurance as function of primary engine performance and engine weight requirements of airplane; method is illustrated by matching series of theoretically defined regenerative and nonregenerative turbofan engines with varying bypass ratios to laminar and turbulent aircraft of typical cruise speed; all of engines are front fan configurations with fans geared to gas generators at bypass ratios greater than 4.0.
