General Electric's GE4 turbojet engine for United States SST is examined, from conceptual design and development program standpoint, against today's airlines' requirements; technical challenge from viewpoint of engine design is examined in following areas -- naturally hostile environment of high ambient temperatures at supersonic cruise speeds, working system compatibility of supersonic air inlet and engine, and need for advanced component technology to produce high performance; propulsion requirements relating to reliability, performance, installation compatibility, noise, and growth potential of engine in thrust/ specific fuel consumption performance, in speed, and in operational maturity; summary of design approach.
