If operational requirements for turbojet-powered aircraft require inlet to operate off-design at reduced inlet mass-flows, theoretical additive drag can be significant in magnitude, compared to basic aircraft drag; this could be equivalent to large penalties in range; proper cowl design will allow much of potential drag increment to be cancelled by a cowl suction force; for subsonic inlets at subsonic Mach numbers, test results show that about 80% of theoretical additive drag can be recovered with reasonably short and thin cowl; for same subsonic inlets at low supersonic Mach numbers, about 50% to 60% can be recovered; other findings.
