Supersonic transport will require considerable advanced technology in several areas of engine propulsion system; steps taken by Pratt & amp; Whitney Aircraft to advance state-of-art related to fulfillment of these requirements are described, in particular, new combustor concept, called "ram induction"; novel design of annular ram induction burner results in reduction in burner size; concept is based on efficient use of velocity head of air to provide turbulent burning zone; other critical component developments are indicated.
