Techniques evaluated included "nitrous fume" analyzer, gaseous nitrogen dioxide colorimeter, and movable mass spectrometer; data obtained were compared to data from wet chemical methods, phenoldisulfonic acid method and "modified" Saltzman technique; mass spectrometer analysis has been found to be most useful for study of nitrogen oxides in engine exhaust measuring NO within seconds of its discharge, thus minimizing any reactions prior to measurement; rapid response allows monitoring of NO in automotive exhaust under transient conditions such as California Motor Vehicle Pollution Control Board Exhaust Test Procedure.
