Brake tests, carried out by experienced drivers, involve measurements of deceleration at various pedal efforts, velocities and temperatures; besides taking these measurements, drivers also make subjective assessments of brakes which correlate remarkably well with other tests; experiments have been carried out to find out how accurate these subjective assessments can be; drivers' subjective estimates of deceleration and pedal efforts were studied; results of measurements are presented together with work arising from them.
