To determine battery needs, cold and hot cracking requirements of engine, battery performance characteristics at hot and cold temperatures, and balance of battery capacity, alternator output and accessory requirements must be evaluated; considerations are used to select battery for hypothetical passenger car, equipped with 400-cu in. engine and minimum values are established by engine laboratory tests; SAE over-charge test, include SAE 20 amp hr capacity test, SAE over-charge test, SAE life cycle tests, charge acceptance test, etc; proving ground tests include rough roads, gravel road, black top, and highspeed oval track testing.
