Stability theory developed by British Railways research staff was evaluated by test vehicle; models of experimental four-wheel car under construction and of two notional suspensions for general purpose fast four-wheel car are described; vertical, lateral and longitudinal springing and damping functions are separated and can be varied independently; experiments were carried out with models on roller test rig, and measurements were made on actual vehicles on track; results gave reasonable correlation with theory of dynamic instability.
