Application of pressure grouting to water pockets under railway track was probably initiated by Pennsylvania Railroad in 1936 and 1938; during 1941 and 1942, grouting methods adapted to routine track maintenance have been studied by at least four other railroads; methods and conditions have differed widely; causes of water pockets; benefits of cement grout; description of methods on railroad in Middle West.
