Review of part played by superstructures in contributing to longitudinal strength of ships; it is suggested that effect of increasing superstructure efficiency is to increase stress in superstructure, and therefore, to increase its contribution to longitudinal strength of ship; this can be obtained by superstructure of sufficient length to avoid end effect, and by reducing deck flexibility of deck of main hull and also superstructure decks by providing extra stiffening.
