First version of family of high horsepower 2-stroke diesel engines, developed by General Motors Corp, is intended for mining and construction industries for off-highway vehicles in 85 to 100-ton range; new family of engines will have basic 149-cu in. cylinder; initial 12-cyl model will produce 800 hp at 1900 rpm, naturally aspirated; 149 series is of 2-stroke type with uniflow scavenging and unit injection fuel systems and will have high degree of parts interchangeability; other design features are described.
