Two 10-cyl diesel engines of type K10Z 57/80 C, directly driving both propellers, were installed in ferry "Empress of Australia" for main propulsion; engines are M.A.N. two-stroke crosshead and work on loop scavenging system, where change of charge is controlled by piston with scavenge ports alone and not with valves; engines are turbocharged, turbocharging being carried out by two Brown Boveri exhaust gas turbochargers, type VTR 500; they operate according to constant-pressure series parallel system; engines are operated on heavy fuel oil.
