Stages of homologation procedure carried out under service conditions in testing of 16-cyl engine are described; P4A engine range is comprised of five engine sizes, 6, 8, 12, 16 and 18 cyl, all turbocharged and charge-air cooled; 16-cyl version is largest used so far in rail traction applications; it was type-tested for 100 hr at 2700 hp, but 2400 hp is maximum installed in locomotive; 16-cyl engine installed in French National Railways Bo-Bo 67,000 series diesel-electric 2400 hp locomotives, twin-engine 4800 hp Bo-Bo 69, 000 series locomotive with hydraulic transmissions, and two 4800 hp Co-Co 70,000 series units with a-c/d-c transmission.
