Investigation conducted to evaluate performance of sewn membrane panels as dustproof and waterproof subgrade surfacing for rapidly constructed helicopter landing pads in theaters of operations; eight sewn panels of T1 No. 8 vinyl-coated cotton duck membrane were placed directly on soil subgrade and exposed to traffic of U S Army helicopters for 8 mo at Simmons Army Airfield, Fort Bragg, NC; panels were joined in field by series of adhesive lap joints to form continuous surfacing; approximately 2 ft of surfacing was extended into ditches at sides of panels, and ditches were backfilled to anchor surfacing in place; results of tests.
