Experimental investigation of "singing" was conducted at Grumman's High Speed Hydrodynamics Laboratory; supercavitating model hydrofoil was operated in high-speed whirling tank from 25 through 80 knots at selected angles of attack, various flow conditions and mechanical constraints; hydrofoil was found to "sing" readily at speeds over 45 knots; "singing" is present when hydrofoil is fully wetted on lower hydrofoil surface; and either fully or partially wetted on upper hydrofoil surface; indications are that "singing" phenomenon is self-excited system and controlling parameter is angle of attack at all speeds over 45 knots; hydrofoil "singing" was completely eliminated by use of rubber damping material that restrained tip chords of hydrofoil.
