Mid-latitude rocket measurement of electron density is presented for altitudes between 65 and 85 km; interpretation of profile indicates that region between 70 and 85 km is ionized by action of Lyman α radiation on nitric oxide rather than by 2 to 8 A X-rays; possible explanations for minimum found in electron density distribution in vicinity of mesopause.
