In most Diesel ships propeller shafts are driven direct and engines of long stroke and low speed are usually preferred; for saving space and weight, use has been made of engines of short stroke and high speed, which drive propeller shafts through mechanical or electrical gearing; both systems have advantages; factors to be considered in selecting one or other of systems.
