It has been assumed that vehicles will stop behind painted crosswalk line and that when crosswalk lines are preceded by stop line, more positive control may be obtained; validity of assumptions tested during study; method used was to observe vehicles stopping at signalized intersections without any markings, with crosswalk lines, and with crosswalk lines and stop lines; table contains listing of general characteristics of each intersection; field procedure.
