On 350,000 mi of main rural roads in United States, travel in 1949 was over 159 billion vehicle miles, of which 78% was by passenger cars, 1% by busses, and 21% by freight carrying vehicles; trucks hauled 7% more ton mileage of freight in 1949 than in 1948; average carried load for trucks in 1949 was 2, 40, and 76% above averages in 1948, 1941, and 1936, respectively.
