Observations made during a years' study of Japanese railway system, before disastrous earthquake of Sept. 1, 1923. Historical notes; physical characteristics of Imperial Japanese Railways; difficulties encountered in building railways in Islands of Japan, and description of type of road bed, bridges, etc., comparison between Japanese and American rolling-stock practice and railway traffic density. A comprehensive scheme of electrification has been decided on with 1500 volts d.c. as standard, calling for total of 336 electric locomotives by the year 1928.
