Doxford engine is only 3-cyl single-acting oil engine which has been built in quantity for propulsion of ocean going vessels; some features peculiar to 3-cyl engine and later developments and modifications made when all welded engine was introduced in 1935 are discussed; engine has been built in number of standard sizes up to 25000 bhp, power sufficient for propulsion of large proportion of world's merchant tonnage.
