Annual loss due to fires by locomotive sparks is stated to be $ 12,000,000; under favorable circumstances it is unlikely that spark of sufficient size and temperature ever reaches ground in condition that will ignite inflammable material beyond 65 ft. from center of track; it is difficult to ignite inflammables with sparks of size that pass through ordinary locomotive netting; distribution of sparks, their behavior under conditions of high temperature, fire-weather forecasts, moisture content as index to degree of inflammability, etc., are discussed.
