Feasibility of full-scale Earth re-entry simulation of planetary entry environment is studied considering Mars and Venus; key subsystems associated with entry phase of unmanned Mars or Venus exploration systems are identified, as well as environmental characteristics influencing them; for exponential atmospheres, three similarity parameters exist involving ratios of ballistic coefficient entry velocities, and slant scale height; implications of similitude relationships are examined in terms of subsystem performance; effects of nonexponential troposphere are examined; it is concluded that exponential atmosphere analyses are adequate.
