Paper presents application of classical variational analysis to aerospacecraft performance optimization; scope of problem may extend from atmospheric flight near earth to orbital space flight; aerodynamic and airbreathing propulsive system characteristics are included in vehicle description; typical structural constraints are provided, and simultaneous operation of rocket and airbreathing propulsive systems is permitted; analysis and solution procedure are outlined and discussed with respect to representative aerospacecraft performance optimization and design-evaluation problem.
