Man-powerplant reliability interface is discussed with emphasis on manned vs automatic sensing and control; various sensing elements are described including major categories of corrective action; comparative capabilities of man and automatic equipment for implementing such action are considered; it is shown that judgment and recognition of powerplant performance and ability to correct abnormal conditions with man included in redundant-component systems results in higher system reliability; expression for man-plus- automatic-redundant-component subsystem is presented that gives subsystem reliability vs reliability of its parts.
